People face a variety of different stressors throughout midlife based on their genes, experiences, socioeconomic status, race and gender. Nancy Woods, dean emeritus of the UW School of Nursing, led a Seattle-based study on the challenges women face in midlife, and found that most women experience stress from a combination of biological, psychological and social transitions.
Modern midlife stressors include caring for children and launching them into the world, caring for aging parents, death of loved ones, relationship/marital problems and divorce, changing careers and questioning identity (just to name a few). My clients have identified the most challenging aspects of midlife as changing family relationships, re-balancing work/personal life, re-discovering self, securing enough resources, and coping with multiple co-occurring stressors.
When they were in their forties and fifties, our mothers and grandmothers may have been parents or worked full-time jobs, but they were more likely to be empty nesters at this age or to work only 9-5. Meanwhile a whole lot of fortysomething women are working more than full-time while raising young children, tending to aging parents, being barraged by social media—and going through perimenopause, all at once. And because of the way we were raised, we tend to feel like we can’t complain because we are lucky to have so many opportunities. If we struggle to meet the demands we’ve placed on ourselves we tend to blame ourselves for not working hard enough. - Ada Calhoun (Why We Can’t Sleep)

~This is an ongoing group ~
This small group offers a unique opportunity to experience the wisdom and support of other women. My groups are for women who have been – or are currently not in crisis, and are interested in self-growth.
This is an ongoing group; we add new members as members leave the group. Women in this group are midlife.
Virtual assessment session is required to assess mutual “fit,” gather history, and prepare the prospective member for group.
